In most gardens, February is a time of planning and getting ready for the growing season. Each year I speak on behalf of the VELCRO® Brand at Flower Shows across the USA. These shows are great because they offer new, creative ideas for gardening. One big trend in gardening is growing in containers and small spaces. There are some cool, new containers out there, not only for growing plants, but for catching rainwater and storing seeds. Let me share a few ideas with you from my travels.
1. Self Watering Containers– Although not necessarily new, these containers address another trend in gardening; people don’t have lots of time to tend the garden. Low maintenance is key. Self watering containers have a water resevoir in the bottom to wicks water into the soil medium. You can go days without watering, even during hot days. They come in many shapes, sizes and bright fashionable colors. You can even grow fruits and veggies hydroponically in some containers.
2. Catch the Water- Drought seems to be an annual event for many parts of the country. Many gardeners are using rain barrels to catch the water off roofs to use in their gardens. While the original rain barrels were a bland green or brown, newer versions have bright colors or even designs making them garden art in the landscape.
3. Succulents Rule- Low maintenance plants are popular and none more than succulents. Agaves, aloes, and sedums are some of the succulents to grow in containers. Get creative about where you grow them. They have shallow root systems, so only need a small space, and they don’t require constant attention.
4. Storage- Not all the containers are for growing. Our new VELCRO® Brand PRESS-LOK® Bags are perfect for containing or storing seeds from year to year. They’re waterproof and clear so you can quickly look inside to see what seeds you have on hand for planting.
